I say no.

From my past experiences, when either party wants to remain friends especially when the break up was recent, that means that they want to get back together.

if months or even years after the break up and you two are still cordial and there is no bad blood between you, then a friendship could be fruitful.

Although every scenario is different, I generally think it's inappropriate.

Acquaintances = casual chitchat on FB, sporadic check-in via emai or phone, all of which your current partner are privvy to? Cool.

But actualy Friendship = lunch dates, extended telephone calls (on a regular basis), long emails exchanged, etc? Completely out of line.

Feel like you need a "male friend"? Your partner should be filling that role. But this is just my $19.13. :-)
